Fleming and Felt Hatcher (c1775) of LaurensCo, SC - represents most common haplotype in HG1

Test 4785 is a descendant of a fairly large Hatcher family that reached its brick wall at James Fulton Hatcher. Although there were indications of a possible connection to LaurensCo, SC, it was not backed up with records.

Tests 4811 and 8229 are descendants of another large family that clearly did have its roots in LaurensCo, SC, with the paper trail to prove it. It was quite a surprise when these 3 tests matched each other, but these descendants now have a clear direction for continued research. The immigrant ancestor for this family remains unknown but a recent match to results from the Milam family, also found in the LaurensCo area, gives a more narrowed path of research.

John Hatcher/Eva Morris - c1767 of SC, SevierCo, TN

Here we have our one exception. This family, the descendants of John Hatcher, son of Jameston Hatcher, has what appears to be a perfect paper trail connecting to William the Immigrant. Yet they do not match with at least a 6 marker difference. Test results from 3 of John's sons show this is not a fluke. Ongoing research seems to indicate that John was more likely a son from an unknown 1st marriage of Jameston's wife, Sarah Hay.

We have just recently developed a serious problem when we tested 2 descendants of the Minnesota Hatchers who are supposedly 2nd cousins. One test, 13125, matched the Quaker Hatchers; the other, 13124, matched the John/Eve group. It would be understandable if one of these tests matched no other Hatcher group due to an unknown adoption or illegitimacy somewhere in the line, but the odds of this adoption or illegitimacy involving another unrelated Hatcher family must be astronomical.

Waccamaw Hatchers of RichmondCo, NC-MarlboroCo, SC
James Hatcher (1787-c1860)

This family had what appeared to be a good opportunity to connect to the family of William the Immigrant based on the presence of many of William's descendants in the area of North and South Carolina where the Waccamaw Hatchers resided in the late 18th century. But the tests once again show we have another unique Hatcher family with the immigrant ancestor unknown. Although it is believed James Hatcher was an Englishman, there are many descendants of this family with clear Native American influence. There are many descendants who are enrolled members of the Waccamaw Indian People of HorryCo, SC.

Recent results have come in that show this Hatcher family to be connected within 200-300 years to the Langford/Lankford family.

QUAKER Hatchers of PA-VA
William Hatcher, c1704-1781
belonging to Haplogroup I1

This family had originally been connected to the family of William the Immigrant and although the error was found several years ago, we still did not know until the following Quaker Hatcher descendants tested, if these two families had a common ancestor in England. They do not, and are clearly a distinct Hatcher family.

We have just recently developed a serious problem when we tested 2 descendants of the Minnesota Hatchers who are supposedly 2nd cousins. One test, 13125, matched these Quaker Hatchers; the other, 13124, does not match to any Hatcher or family group.

We now have a tester, N67499, whose ancestors settled in Newfoundland with origins in Dorset, England.

A note concerning the "Quaker" Hatchers - recent research has shown that the family of William Hatcher of VA were not originally Quakers but that William and family joined the Society later in life.

Our mystery Hatchers

The marker values for the following two tests are unique to the over 30000 tests in the FTDNA database with no test matching any closer than 3 to 4 mutations, thus making it impossible to determine which Haplogroup they belong to.

It appears that FTDNA is also intrigued by these results and has offered to do additional testing free of charge in hopes of assigning them their proper place on the "tree of humanity." On June 7, 2005 this additional testing has placed these two testers into Haplogroup I - The I, I1, and I1a lineages are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe.

Yet another mystery Hatcher
Haplogroup K2

This tester was believed to descend from the Quaker Hatchers but his results show he does not. He belongs to Haplogroup K2, an old lineage presently found only at low frequencies in Africa, Asia, and in the Middle East. This specific line is found at low frequency in southern Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. His results do not match to any other surname at this time, giving us no avenue of research to discover his true family.

Another (expected) mystery Hatcher

This tester is a descendant of Martha Hatcher, believed to be a daughter (not a daughter-in-law) of Daniel Hatcher of AndersonCo, SC. While Martha had 7 children, no husband was found with her in 2 censi. The results of this test, which do not match the results for her brothers' descendants show that she was not the wife of a Hatcher. The search will now continue to determine who the father of these children may have been.

The Thatchers

For many years, based on a very confusing and very early record, it was suspected that the Quaker Hatchers were really descendants of Richard Thatcher. The following test results show without a doubt that the Thatcher tester is in no way related to the Hatchers with 9 mismatches. But one test is not definitive. It was only recently that a 2nd Thatcher descendant also tested producing a 25-25 match to our Thatcher results. We can now say with some confidence that the Thatchers, descendants of Richard Thatcher of BucksCo, PA, are not related to our Quaker Hatchers.
