Honorary Lifetime Members

These members have been honored by the HFGA board for their major contributions to our Hatcher research.

 Roy Shelton Hatcher
1919 - 2008
My entry into the world of genealogy research occurred in late 1996, not out of any overwhelming desire to find my ancestors, but only out of a sense of curiosity after clicking the Genealogy link on the Library of Congress site.

After fumbling around and failing to discover my own family ancestors, I decided to search out my husband's Hatcher family. And that is how I came to meet Roy Shelton Hatcher who ended up sending me his Hatcher family on a floppy disk.

That was the beginning of a long and enjoyable friendship until his death in 2008.

Robert Earl Hatcher   Robert Hatcher, known as Ala Bob, also sent me a floppy disk. Over a period of years, having come into possession of the research of S C Moore, he sent me every document relating to the Hatchers. These records represent the majority of the documentation found on our file for the family of Maj. John of WilkinsonCo, GA. Had he not rescued those records, we would have had to start from scratch in documenting this very large family.

Kenneth Smith   Ken, too, sent me a floppy disk. I now had 3 files that I, thru my lack of experience and ignorance, merged into 1 file - a major disaster - but a mistake that kept me in this game, for I was a wee inch away from finding another "hobby." The contradictions, bad connections and outright impossibilities I was looking at was a challenge I couldn't pass up. And the rest is history.

Had I not received those floppies from Roy, Ala Bob and Ken, I might have ended up crocheting booties..............

Cecil Q Larsen   Cecil dropped into my life sometime around 2001 with a routine inquiry on his ancestor. Daily communication continued until together we were satisfied we had this family thoroughly documented. I was impressed with his obvious experience and analytical skills but figured he would soon disappear into the woodwork. He didn't. And soon we were working together on a daily basis. His 2-3 annual week-long trips to SLC produced an abundance of records that has, more than anything, helped to create the files we have today. Cecil's work can't be estimated with any degree of accuracy but he clearly "owns" a huge percentage of the documentation on our files and is responsible for cleaning up much old and bad research. He is still with us as a co-administrator for our site and............still Sherlocking!

Joyce R Harrison
Joyce, too, was an early member of our growing group and a descendant of Maj. John. She was an experienced researcher whose input into many long discussions about Maj John was instrumental in sorting out a difficult problem. She was always ready to do a library run searching for new records. Most importantly, she was responsible, whether aware of it or not, for teaching me the importance of good documentation. You rock, Scarlett!!

John and Darleen Chipman
John and Darleen, while Quaker Hatcher researchers, have always been "family friendly", collecting Hatcher data wherever they found it. Summer finds them on the road traveling through the midwest states, collecting courthouse records and snapping Hatcher tombstone pics in cemeteries large and small, accessible or barely accessible. Their abundant contributions can be found scattered through several of our files. The Dyno-duo!

Rena Worthen Our Rena, a VA native, while usually staying in the background, has been with us since the earliest days and has been a consistent and devoted contributor of Hatcher data and documents over these years.  But this is only a small part of her contributions to the world of genealogy. In her spare time she has walked and recorded dozens of cemeteries, compiling and publishing at least 11 cemetery books. She is also the GenWeb county coordinator for  Salem City, Nelson, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Loudoun, Rockbridge, Botetourt, Roanoke and Patrick counties.  She has also been a Findagrave contributor since 2007. Phew! She's making me tired!
